These are "spirit houses."
This practice is a blend of the native Athabaskan Indians and the Russian Orthodox church.
The colors of the houses represent family or tribe colors.
Sizes vary, where a child's house may be the size of a shoe box, but a grown male's may be six feet long.
The story goes that one month after the burial, the family will bring favorite foods and things to help on the journey to heaven. Then on the full moon the spirit will climb to the top of the tallest spruce tree and float on up to heaven.
