Howe Sound boat dives

2009.10.11
8AM at Horseshoe Bay Marina. Very cold. The prospect of putting on a wet wetsuit is not enticing.

The Sea Dragon.

Waiting for the sea to die down so we can leave the marina.

Sea urchin.

Vermilion Star.

Brittle stars. Creepy things.

Grey Brittle Stars and Painted Star.

Feather Star.

Gliding over a valley of giant plumose anemones.

Visibility not great!

After getting ourselves to Horseshoe Bay Marina ridiculously early for a Sunday, we learnt that the sea was too chopy for the boat to go out. After a couple of hours of hanging around, we got the green light to go. Our first dive was at Dorman Bay. It was our first boat dive, and the current was so strong that it was effectively a drift dive, which was quite exciting. The rock wall was covered in life - lots of anemones, sea stars, urchins, fish. Sorry for the blurry photos! It was very dark down there. The second dive was at Bowyer Island ("the canyons"). This dive featured valleys of giant plumose anemones, and walls covered in brittle sea stars, which I found very creepy.
